The AFN conducts extensive parliamentary monitoring and analysis on matters which have direct impact on First Nations. The role of the AFN’s Research and Policy Coordination Sector is to offer strategic support through the gathering and development of research and policy and legislation regarding the AFN’s position as the national advocacy organization representing First Nations in Canada.

Access to Federal Decision Makers

Prime Minister Trudeau has addressed the Chiefs-in-Assembly on three occasions since 2015. In December 2017, the AFN hosted a parliamentary reception to facilitate First Nations access to Parliamentarians and key decision-makers. In order to maintain First Nations access to Parliamentarians and key decision-makers. The AFN Assemblies and the AFN Executive Committee meetings regularly feature involvement from senior Cabinet Ministers and Officials.

Advocacy on Key Legislative Priorities

As a result of First Nations advocacy, the House of Commons passed Bill C-262, An Act to Implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UN Declaration) on May 30, 2018. National Chief Perry Bellegarde has written to Parliamentarians and Senators seven times since 2015 requesting their support for the UN Declaration.

In the past year, political representatives and the AFN secretariat staff made presentations to the Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs, Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs and the Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities in addition to written submissions to both the House of Commons and the Senate.
